It is probably because they invented them, and some of them have been going since the Middle Ages.

Dresden Christmas Market (Striezelmarkt)
Dates: November 27 – December 24, 2024
Dating back to 1434, Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. Located in the Altmarkt square, it is famous for its giant Christmas pyramid, Stollen festival, and traditional crafts. The market’s name comes from “Striezel,” a local cake that is the precursor to the famous Stollen.
Nuremberg Christmas Market (Christkindlesmarkt)
Dates: November 29 – December 24, 2024
Held in the heart of the city on the Hauptmarkt square, Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is renowned for its traditional red and white striped stalls. It features Nuremberg Lebkuchen (gingerbread), handmade ornaments, and the famous “Christkind,” who opens the market with a festive prologue. The market also has a Kinderweihnacht (Children’s Christmas) area with rides and activities.

Colmar Christmas Market
Dates: November 22 – December 29, 2024
Colmar’s picturesque old town becomes even more enchanting during the Christmas season. The market is spread across five sites, each with its own theme. Highlights include the Place Jeanne d’Arc, which focuses on Alsatian delicacies, and the Petite Venise area, perfect for families with its children’s animations and carousel.
