Have you ever heard about a place that piqued your curiosity and made you want to visit? That was what drew me to Berkeley, California. There is a rich history here, from the counterculture to the Beatnik era, as well as numerous things to do in Berkeley; it piqued my curiosity, and I knew I had to visit to see it for myself. So many people visit nearby San Francisco, and don’t realize how many gems are located a stone’s throw away. That is why I decided to take a solo break to Berkeley, California, best known for its university, University of California, Berkeley.
This vibrant city is a unique blend of diverse food, natural beauty, thrift stores, art, and culture that truly make this place a must-visit when visiting the Bay Area.
Whether you’re into the arts, hiking, or just people watching while sipping some coffee from a cafe, Berkeley makes for a rewarding solo trip.

Day 1 Arriving in Downtown Berkeley
I started my day by arriving in the heart of downtown Berkeley. There are so many choices for lunch, but one place stood out to me as an oasis in the city center- Jupiter. Before I checked in I needed to eat, and this was such a great choice if you love woodfired pizzas, mouthwatering sandwiches, and a pleasant environment to eat in. Jupiter probably has one of the best courtyards in Downtown Berkeley to enjoy the mild weather as you chow down.
This is a 30-year-old Berkeley staple, and it is not surprising once you enter. I had the Achiote Chicken sandwich, but the pizzas looked fabulous. While I do not drink, they are known for having some of the best brews in the East Bay. However, I enjoyed some of their Paradise Iced Tea, which was really refreshing.
This location is situated at 2181 Shattuck Avenue and is close to the UC Berkeley Campus. If you have time, it is nice to take a walk to explore the area, but since I was going to be here for a few days, I knew I would return to enjoy the views from the Camponile and wander the campus a bit.
Next up, I drove to Berkeley Marina to check in to my hotel for the next few days.
Where to Stay in Berkeley
DoubleTree by Hilton Berkeley Marina
My home base for the weekend was the newly renovated DoubleTree by Hilton Berkeley Marina, a peaceful retreat right on the San Francisco Bay. It’s close to BART, Highway 80, and UC Berkeley, but feels worlds away with its waterfront views and walking trails.
- Why I loved it: The Berkeley Boathouse Restaurant has skyline views of San Francisco, and the bayfront trail to Cesar Chavez Park was perfect for morning walks. My room was also amazing with Bay views and the marina. It was perfect to enjoy a cup of coffee from my balcony in the morning. Also, Doubletree cookies need I say more!
- Best for: Solo travelers who want a serene escape but still be close to the action. It was relaxing to stay here as it was not in the city center, but close enough to enjoy the city day or night. This made parking a breeze.

After checking in and freshening up, it was time for dinner at The Berkeley Marina. I grabbed the seafood chowder and a Cobb salad. It was the perfect meal before heading out for a special evening at the Hearst Greek Theatre.
Hearst Greek Theatre (2001 Gayley Rd)- Joan Jett and Billy Idol Concert
If you happen to be in Berkeley, California, when there is a show at the Greek Theatre, I highly recommend you grab tickets. This was one of the best outdoor concert venues I have been to in the country. The acoustics, vibe, and entire experience was a 10/10.
When I saw that Billy Idol and Joan Jett were playing, I was so excited and knew I had to make time to see these rock legends. The weather was terrific, not too hot, and not to cold. They have a variety of tickets at different prices, but I joined the lawn. Joan Jett walked out first and delivered an outstanding performance to “Bad Reputation” and shortly after, Billy Idol got the crowd dancing to “Rebel Yell” and “Dancing by Myself”.
The atmosphere was electrifying, the sky sparkled with the city of Berkeley and the UC Berkeley Campus. Then Billy Idol and Joan Jett appeared, with as much attitude as they had in the ’80s, and somehow seemed ageless.
Sitting alone on the stone steps, surrounded by thousands of strangers, I didn’t feel alone at all. The music ricocheted off the hills, and for a moment, everyone was young and alive. It is definitely a place to visit for music lovers and to experience the Berkeley community.
Day 2 : Exploring the streets, flavors, and gardens of Berkeley, California
Morning- A French Beginning
Waking up to the beauty of the Berkeley Marina with the skyline of San Francisco in the distance was quite the view. After enjoying a cup of coffee, I headed out to have breakfast at a highly recommended French-inspired cafe on Shattuck Ave called La Note (2377 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704). This Berkeley café feels like a sunlit corner of southern France tucked into downtown Berkeley. The scent of espresso and warm pancakes wafts through the air, greeting me as I step inside. I decided on fresh blueberry pancakes with some eggs and bacon on the side. Of course, I had to try the latte served in a bowl! The details in decor and homey nature of this piece of France in Downtown Berkeley was the perfect start to the morning.
Shopping in Berkeley
I began with a walk on Shattuck Avenue to check out the thrift shop on Shattuck that had caught my attention before breakfast – Crossroads Trading. I am telling you, Berkeley, California, has the best thrift and vintage shops. There were many cute dresses, bags, and more from some great brands. I ended up getting a cool denim dress from Good American for like $12!
Getting thirsty? Try the brand new matcha spot on Shattuck Avenue Yume Mari Matcha. I truly enjoyed the ceremonial grade matcha with creamy milk and strawberry. It was a burst of flavor, but not to sweet. Finally, I hit the road again to the historic Telegraph Avenue.
Late Morning- Wandering Telegraph Avenue
Every great city has a street that defines it. For Berkeley, that’s Telegraph Avenue- 4.5 miles of genius, amazing bookstores, and restaurants/shops connecting Berkeley to Oakland. I spent the rest of the morning wandering up and down the stretch. It is a living museum of counterculture and creativity.
If you’re a fan of street art, you will find your favorite spot in Berkeley.I ducked into Moe’s Books (2476 Telegraph Ave) this is one of the longest family run independent bookstores in the country and a Berkeley Landmark.
Moe’s Books, founded in 1959, has been a centerpiece of the counterculture scene, located near UC Berkeley it served as a hub for students and activists during the Free Speech Movement.
Another must-visit spot on Telegraph Ave is Amoeba Music (2455 Telegraph Ave), the hum of nostalgia can be found as you flip through records. This area is also a hub for vintage shops, cafes, and food spots, such as Mezzo.
1:30 PM- Lunch at Roast & Toast Café
By early afternoon, I made my way to Roast & Toast Café (1746 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA 94709)- a cozy, modern spot in North Berkeley known for its fresh sandwiches, fantastic coffee, and desserts, such as their handmade ice cream. The café hums with local life: students studying, friends catching up, and it’s great to soak in the Berkeley cafe vibes, while filling your stomach with some delicious food.
I ordered a roast beef sandwich called the Beef Boss, and ordered an iced Spanish Latte. The sandwich was massive, but it was also amazing. It was an easy kind of meal, and sometimes these spots are the easiest to dine alone with no hassles quickly, so you can continue to hit the sights of the city. Instagram: @roastandtoast_cafe
Afternoon- The North Shattuck & the Birth of California Cuisine
After lunch, I wandered along North Shattuck Avenue, a neighborhood that changed the way America eats and drinks its coffee. This is where California Cuisine was born- an approach that celebrates fresh, local, seasonal ingredients. I peeked into the original Pete’s Coffee and paused in front of Chez Panisse (1517 Shattuck Ave), the legendary restaurant where Alice Waters redefined dining itself.
If you have an opportunity to grab a coffee at the Original Pete’s Coffee you can find a small museum inside that shares some information on the founding of Pete’s.
3 PM- Gardens in Bloom: UC Botanical Garden & Tilden Park
By mid-afternoon, I was ready to trade the city streets for nature. A short drive up into the hills brought me to the UC Botanical Garden (200 Centennial Dr, Berkeley, CA 94720) a 34-acre sanctuary filled with plants from every corner of the world. The garden winds through gentle slopes, each section dedicated to a different region: deserts from the Southwest, lush Asian landscapes, and California natives. They even have a Redwood Grove. This place will make you feel like you’re miles away from the city!
From there, I continued into Tilden Regional Park’s Botanical Garden, a quieter, more intimate experience dedicated entirely to native Californian species. One thing that impressed me about Berkeley was all of their gardens, and I even added another one by visiting the Berkeley Rose Garden as well, which had beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.
6 PM- Dinner by the Bay
By evening, I returned to the DoubleTree Hotel Berkeley Marina for a quick rest before heading out again for dinner.
Dinner that night was at Skates on the Bay (100 Seawall Dr, Berkeley, CA 94710), a waterfront restaurant perched right above the waves.I got dressed up for an epic solo sunset date with 180-degree waterfront views from the dining area.
I arrived just as the sun began to dip behind the Golden Gate Bridge. The glass windows caught the fiery glow as the sun started to set below the horizon. It was amazing to take in. I ordered some sushi to begin with, and then ordered a pasta dish, Dungeness Crab and Shrimp Linguini. I was told this is their most ordered dish, and I can see why.
It was the kind of dinner that invites reflection and was deeply satisfying. Plus, it was close by to my hotel, which made it super convenient. Berkeley, I realized, isn’t about checking boxes or rushing through attractions, but experiencing the city and soaking in the vibe. The joy of slowing down was what I was searching for and found in Berkeley.
Day 3 Morning Tea, Elmwood Adventures, and Berkeley Arts and Culture at its Finest
Morning – Breakfast at the Berkeley Boathouse
I began the day with breakfast at a picturesque spot near Strawberry Creek Park, called “The Hidden Cafe.” This popular spot for coffee and light bites is a must if you have time. It is open Tuesday- Sunday, 8:30 am- 5 pm. It is located next door to one of the best bakeries in Berkeley, which can also be found at some local farmers’ markets – The Phoenix Pastificio. I had a yummy, fresh strawberry scone and enjoyed my coffee under the sun’s rays while sitting in the park.
One of the best things about Berkeley is the weather, which you can experience almost every day of the year, thanks to its mild climate.
11 AM – Asha Tea House: Berkeley Farm-to-Tea
Later, I wandered down to Asha Tea House (2086 University Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704), a sun-filled café that blends the mindfulness of tea culture with the vibrancy of Berkeley. Their menu celebrates local, seasonal ingredients infused with global flavors- herbal blends, matcha, and chai prepared with care. I chose an iced matcha drink with freshly made boba. I truly loved how the lanterns were designed by the owner’s mother and the industrial yet warm modern minimalist design of the Asha Tea House.
Afternoon – Elmwood District & Italian Lunch
By midday, I ventured into the Elmwood District, a serene contrast to the energy of Telegraph Avenue. Elmwood is the quintessential Main Street: tree-lined streets, independent boutiques, and a feeling that each shop has been curated by someone who truly loves what they sell. I wandered through some of the 50 shops at Elmwood indie bookstores, artisan shops, and a few vintage finds, following my curiosity wherever it took me.
Lunch was at Donato & Co., a warm Italian eatery where the open kitchen filled the room with the aromas of wood-fired pizza, fresh herbs, and freshly made pasta.I chose a seasonally inspired pasta, each bite making me savor the mix of fresh ingredients. Another restaurant in Berkeley, California, that will transport you to the other side of the world in one bite.
3 PM – South Berkeley Farmers’ Market
The afternoon carried me to the South Berkeley Farmers’ Market, a vibrant weekly gathering where the season’s harvest is laid out in front of your eyes from local farmers in California: fresh melons, fruits, produce, and other local bakeries crafting up special recipes. I love going to a good farmers market as it really shows you the local pace of life and gives you a feel for what grows in the area, and where to find local makers.
Evening – Relax and Prepare for Nightlife
By 4 PM, I returned to the DoubleTree, grateful for a bit of time to rest and recharge. A shower, a short nap, a quick outfit change, and I was ready to step out into the golden Berkeley evening to the Berkeley Downtown Arts District for a show.
5:30 PM – Dinner at Revival Bar + Kitchen
Dinner was at Revival Bar + Kitchen (2102 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704), a great spot to dine before a show. I headed hear before going to the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. This was a busy spot, and the staff were really friendly here.I ordered steak and Butcher’s Cut Terres Steak, with mash potatoes it was cooked to perfection.
7 PM – The Berkeley Repertory Theatre
Finally, I arrived at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre (2025 Addison St, Berkeley, CA 94704) for the evening performance: The Reservoir. I recommend checking their website so you can see what is showing during your visit. From the outside you do not realize the transformative experience you are walking into. Have a drink or coffee with a cookie in the courtyard as you wait to be seated.
The house lights dimmed, the murmurs quieted, and I sank into my seat, captivated by the performance of The Reservoir. Theater, especially alone, has a way of pulling you completely into the story. The energy of the live performance was felt by the crowd, who gave a standing ovation at the end.I felt both invisible and fully present, lost in the characters, the dialogue, the energy of live performance.
Day 4: Art, Flavors, and the best view of Berkeley?
Morning- Check-Out
I started the day slow to enjoy my last morning at the DoubleTree by Hilton Berkeley Marina. The Bay stretched out in front of me, sitting with a final cup of coffee, I allowed myself to soak in the calm before a hectic travel day.Eventually, it was time to check out, but not before a last stroll along the waterfront, savoring the quiet of the marina and of course grabbing another Doubletree cookie.
12 PM- Lunch at Middle East Café
On the way to lunch I decided to check out another cute store-the Curiosity Shop. With that name how would I be able to skip it. They have thousands of pieces of jewelry and things you probably don’t need, but at a steal for the price will probably walk out of the store with. This is a thrift boutique of all types of jewelry. Definitely a first for me.
For lunch, I wandered to Middle East Café (2054 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94702). The café is a hidden treasure where spices, fresh ingredients, and food from memories of my childhood can be smelled cooking in the kitchen. The Middle East Market next door had been going strong for 65 years, and decided they should open a restaurant next door. I got the delicious chicken breast with basmati rice.They have so many different drinks and other goods from the Middle East it was definitely a great experience. I recommend dining outside in the colorful courtyard to enjoy their lunch specials.
2 PM – Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA)
The afternoon carried me a few blocks into the heart of Berkeley’s arts district to BAMPFA (2155 Center Street, Berkeley, CA 94720). The building is striking- concrete, steel, and glass combine to create a modern home to compelling galleries and exhibits inside. Exhibitions range from contemporary and avant-garde art to film screenings, all carefully curated. I wandered through installations and fell in love with the Quilt exhibit made up of over 3000 quilts made by African American artists donated at the bequest from collector Eli Leon. The exhibit is guided by the history of the Second Great Migration. It is one of the most unique exhibits I have ever visited.
Farewell at Indian Rock Park
Before leaving Berkeley, I made my way to Indian Rock Park (Stone Ave & Indian Rock Ave, Berkeley, CA 94707). The climb up the granite outcroppings is gentle but rewarding. From the summit, the panorama of the bay area unfolds. It was the perfect place to say goodbye for now to Berkeley seeing the city’s rooftops, the shining water of the bay, and the distant San Francisco skyline.
Sitting atop the rocks, I breathed deeply, letting the last few days soak in a city break solo was exactly what I needed and allowed me to connect with the local business owners I met and locals. Berkeley felt alive with all of the markets to choose from, cafes, and with a vibrant arts and culture scene- I was never bored. I could not imagine more of a perfect ending.
How to get to Berkeley, California?
I ended up flying driving back to SFO to fly out, but there are also other ways to get to and from Berkeley, California. There is also the option of taking the Bart which connects to San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley.
If you are flying into Berkeley you can come in to Oakland’s airport or San Francisco’s airport. There is also the option to take Amtrak as well to Berkeley.
Basically there is no excuse and you can definitely find a way to come visit Berkeley!
