A Seine River cruise is one of the most elegant and rewarding ways to explore France. Starting and ending in beautiful Paris, this itinerary combines the glamour of the City of Light with the charm of Normandy’s countryside, medieval towns, and Impressionist heritage. For my 8-day voyage aboard VIVA Gloria (July 24–31, 2025) on the Seine Romance Itinerary, I discovered why this is the ideal cruise for my mother–daughter trip with my mom. This trip is also ideal for a girls’ getaway, anniversary celebration, solo travel, or for anyone who loves history, art, culture, and food.

Paris is a dream embarkation point. Unlike other European river cruises that stretch across multiple countries, the Seine River cruise with Viva Cruises keeps its focus squarely on France. For me, this cruise was a special choice for a trip with my mother. It allowed us to see so many towns and cultural treasures easily, without the stress of driving, navigating trains, or hunting for hotels in smaller towns. Instead, the ship became our comfortable floating hotel, serving fine meals and offering relaxation between adventures.
Life Onboard VIVA Gloria (Ship Review)
The VIVA Gloria river ship carries about 152 passengers in 76 cabins, creating a boutique, intimate feel. Public spaces include a panoramic lounge, stylish restaurant, wellness area, and a sun deck with loungers for soaking up the summer sunshine. Importantly, the ship has an elevator, making it easy for all ages and mobility levels to move between a few decks.
Cabins are modern and comfortable, many with French balconies (I highly recommend getting one) for fresh air and views of the passing scenery. Dining is a highlight: menus blend international favorites with regional specialties from Normandy and Paris, paired with wines and ciders. The all-inclusive experience means drinks, Wi-Fi, and gratuities are taken care of, so there are no surprises.
Life onboard Viva Cruises feels effortless. Between excursions, you can relax with a book, sip coffee while sailing past cliffs and villages, or simply watch the crew expertly guide the ship through locks. It is a reminder of why river cruising is so much easier than land travel.
Seine Romance Cruise Itinerary- Viva Cruises
Many maybe worried you need to be a couple to enjoy a romanitc cruise on the Seine, but it is equally amazing to go with someone you love and I brought my mom. This itinerary had everything we loved from the homes of artists we adored, exploring medieval towns, and enjoying slower pace of life outside of life in Paris.
There’s something about cruising down the Seine that feels effortlessly timeless. Watching the Paris skyline fade into rolling green hills, passing quiet villages that look like they belong in a painting- its’ probably because it probably is. It’s the kind of slow travel that lets you to actually relax. For my mom and me, the Seine Romance cruise with wasn’t just about seeing France; it was about sharing those little moments- sipping coffee on deck at sunrise, wandering through cobblestoned streets, and laughing over pastries and eating food we couldn’t pronounce. Each stop along the river had its own story, and together they made an itinerary that felt equal parts adventure and connection to the local culture.
Day 1: Paris Embarkation
Boarding in Paris on Thursday, July 24th set the stage for a magical beginning with Viva Cruises. After unpacking, stroll along the Seine or relax on deck as the ship begins to glide under the city’s elegant bridges. Sailing through Paris at twilight, with the Eiffel Tower glittering, is a moment to treasure.
Day 2: Conflans (and Auvers-sur-Oise)
On day 2 we arrived in Conflans at 3pm. Known as the “capital of the bargemen,” this riverside town celebrates the history of life on the water. The town’s atmosphere is peaceful, dotted with riverside cafés, etc. However we took an excursion to Auvers-sur-Oise to explore van Gogh’s life while in France and his final steps, scenes of many of his paintings and where he eventually was buried with his brother. Sadly he had limited success while alive and you can tell from seeing the room he rented here to do his paintings. The tour included the Chateau d’Auvers, as well as many places van Gogh painted like the Romanesque-Gothic Church of Our Lady of Assumption, Hotel de Villa (i.e. the City Hall), meadows, etc. we then returned to the ship to have dinner and sail to the next destination, Rouen.
Day 3: Rouen
On day 3 we arrived in Rouen, a highlight of the Seine with its popular medieval history. Today we took an excursion, “Back to the Middle Ages with Chocolate & Cheese Tasting”.
With the tour we explored the town and tasted some awesome chocolate and cheeses from the area. Le Bar Bickett (@fromageriebarbickett) had the most wonderful cheese, followed by tasty chocolates at Hautot Chocolatier (https://chocolatshautot.com). It also included a great tour. Rouen’s towering Notre-Dame Cathedral is world-famous, not only for its soaring Gothic architecture, but also for being the subject of over 30 paintings by Claude Monet, who captured its changing light at different times of day. Inside the cathedral the heart of Richard the Lionheart is housed, placed here after his death in 1199. It was truly interesting to explore more after the tour.
Just a short walk away is the Gros-Horloge, the city’s magnificent 14th-century astronomical clock arching over the street, a must-see landmark. Rouen’s old town is filled with many historic timber-framed houses and wonderful cobbled lanes. Sadly the historic square is where Joan of Arc was executed. The square has a church in her honor (it was closed the time I visited).
Before we left town we did visit Anne Caron (https://cafeannecaron.com/en), a specialty coffee cafe to have a wonderful latte!.Then we walked to see more sights before have wonderful crepes at La Cornaelle – ROUEN Creperie House. In the end, Rouen was so great to learn about the blend of art, history, atmosphere, fine cheeses and chocolates, and coffee– the town is like few others.
Day 4: Le Havre
At the Seine’s mouth to the English Channel, Le Havre is strikingly different. Rebuilt after being destroped in World War II, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site given its innovative modernist architecture of Auguste Perret. While I didn’t get to visit, if you have time you may visit the MuMa (Museum of Modern Art André Malraux), home to one of France’s largest collections of Impressionist art. The harbor area buzzes with energy, and excursions often include nearby coastal gems. We did take a tour of the city and went to visit the impressive St. Joseph Church, with its great stained glass windows.
While in Le Havre we took an excursion to Etretat, with its massive white chalk cliffs on the waterfront. This historic village is so quaint and great to explore along with the beach. There is a church high on the hill that I climbed to see while my mom explored the village. I can see why Monet loved to paint on the waterfront.
Honfleur is another village we went to tour. This coastal village is so picturesque and is considered one of the most beautiful. I enjoyed walking the cobblestone streets, seeing the half-timbered houses from the 16-18th century as well as the lovely sailboats in the harbor. Before leaving me and my mother stopped for a latte at La Maison Bleue Honfleur.
Day 5 – Morning: Les Andelys
Few places capture the romance of the Seine like Les Andelys, with its dramatic chalk cliffs and sweeping views. Above the town stand the ruins of Château Gaillard, built by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th century. My excursion took me to explore the city. While I climbed the hill to hike a bit, my mother explored the main village. Walking among the ruins up on the hill, it feels like history came alive. The scenery here is storybook-perfect, with charming streets and riverside promenades below the fortress. My mother explored the historic village, its church, etc. she found a great pastry shop and then met me in the nearby cafe to have a latte before returning to the ship for our much awaited trip in the afternoon.
Day 5 – Afternoon: Vernon (and Giverny)
Vernon is a picturesque town with medieval half-timbered houses, but the real draw is nearby Giverny, where Claude Monet lived and painted. His house and gardens are wonderfully preserved, including the famous water lily pond and Japanese bridge seen in many of his masterpieces. While it is so popular with folks from around the world, walking through the garden feels like stepping into one of his painting. This stop is one of the most enchanting of the entire cruise.
I always was a fan of Monet’s work and seeing them in various museums throughout the world. It is great to walk in this lovely town that inspired him and stop by the gravesite where he was laid to rest. Prepare with good walking shoes since you do walk from the parking area to his garden and we went through the garden before we went through the house where you see more of his works and inspiration. This was a grand stop before heading back to the city of lights for our final excursion.
Day 6 & 7: Return to Paris
On day 6 we sailed back to Paris and arrived mid-morning. This gave us a full day to enjoy before Disembarkation on Day 8. We had time to relax on the deck, share stories with fellow passengers, and enjoy a farewell dinner with a great show onboard that evening. Watching the Paris skyline reappear is the perfect finale to this trip, but we got to have one last tour of this fantastic city via bus/walking tour called “Paris: The City of Love, Art & Culture”. The tour passed by many of the famous landmarks of the city including the Eiffel Tour, Place de la Concorde, Cathedral of the Invalides, Arc de Triomphe and so much more. We also had time to visit the newly renovated Notre Dame and see more of the Marais. What a fantastic city to start and end this wonderful tour.
Day 8: Paris Disembarkation
We disembarked our Viva Cruise at 9:30am in Paris after our breakfast with your bags packed with souvenirs and your heart full of memories. Whether heading straight home or staying a few extra days, the city offers endless opportunities. We stayed a few more days in this marvelous city.

This trip was the perfect blend of sightseeing and serenity, and an ideal way to spend meaningful time with my mother. Once on board you unpack one time for the week. We didn’t have to hunt for various hotels or places to stay in all these towns and cities. The pace is balanced and stress-free since there was no driving, no hopping to various hotels or B&Bs, and we could relax while cruising. If you change your mind you can stay on the ship and relax. We went to some great historic towns steeped in history, and got to walk in the path of some great painters and artists. Viva Cruises really out did themselves making this an educational as well as cultural experience floating down the Seine.

Just imagining myself sipping a hot chocolate on the sun deck as we pass the sparkling lights of Paris feels like a dream. I can already picture sailing on the Seine exploring art, culture, and storybook towns on their new itinerary and ship.

Every day offered a new highlight, whether it was Joan of Arc’s story in Rouen, Monet’s lilies at Giverny, or eating tasty chocolates and cheeses. The combination of effortless shipboard life and enriching excursions made it the perfect choice for my mother–daughter trip and can be the perfect one for your girls’ celebration or a romantic anniversary.
